Presto 3.8 released  [October 2011]

Inmagic, Inc. recently released Presto 3.8. One of the key new enhancements is query logging and reporting. A new Event type has been added that logs queries. The Event Log Report tracks the query itself, which Content Types were queried, how many records were found and who was the user. Event log reports can now be filtered by a date range. Some of the other new features and enhancements include:

Reporting

  • Ability to Export (all, or by id/name) and Import (new or Replace Property) report definitions using normal export request XML files.
  • Enhanced report writer now available.

Roles

  • New Profile Filters feature to allow you to restrict user access to specific field values. For example, you can assign multiple users to the same role, so they have the same permissions, but allow them to edit only the records they added, not anyone else's records. Or you can restrict users to different security levels, so some users can see Public and Internal records, while others can see only Public records.
  • DOWNLOAD (save as PDF or HTML) and DOWNLOAD XML are now separate permissions.
  • Roles are now sorted alphabetically by Name on the Configure Roles page and Add Roles pop-up window.

Content Type settings

  • A new Application Setting that permits you to automatically populate new records in a specific Content Type with field values from the Profile record of the user who adds the record.
  • Edit Screens now support the ability to add Comments, so that if you are editing a record you do not need to return to the Detail Screen to comment on the record.
  • Content Relations - You can now relate a content type to itself (for example, to implement "see also" functionality).

Australian geographic places thesaurus  [September 2011]

Organising your records by geographic places?

The Clearinghouse at Women’s Health Victoria (WHV) has constructed and is maintaining a simple Geographic Thesaurus using Inmagic Text Works. Using the controlled vocabulary for places in their thesaurus, WHV are adding keywords to indicate geographic coverage. Searching the Clearinghouse collection for material limited by geographic area will be simple.

Geographic terms are included for:
- Continents – eg: Asia
- Other regions which span continents – eg: Middle East, Pacific Region
- Countries
- States and Territories of Australia
- State capitals for Australia
- Victorian regions – aligned with Department of Health Regions (map provided)with scope notes as to which LGAs fall into each region
- Any other important place names are to be specified within the abstract
- When indexing, we can also add the terms ‘Rural areas’ or ‘Urban areas” from the subject thesaurus as relevant

This model “is working REALLY well for us”. WHV has generously offered that they have no copyright issues and are happy to share this.

If you would like a copy of the Australian geographic thesaurus, please contact Women’s Health Victoria Clearinghouse – email: clearinghouse@whv.org.au or Maxus Australia by email or phone (03)9646 1988.

Australian Rail social library showcased  [May 2011]

The Rail KnowledgeBank, developed by Cooperative Research Centre for Rail Innovation (CRC for Rail Innovation) using Presto for Social Libraries, has recently been showcased in Inmagic's blog.

The Rail KnowledgeBank aims to provide a single, easily searchable repository for Australian and International rail-related information. This initiative was created to address the potentially serious and compounding problem in coming years of the widespread loss of industry knowledge through significant levels of workforce retirement and aims to create a vital resource for the Australian rail industry.

For more information on the project, check out our case study with details of the CRC for Rail Innovation's challenges and requirements, why it chose Presto for Social Libraries for the job, how Maxus helped the organisation implement it, and the results CRC for Rail Innovation is now seeing for its organisation and the rail industry.

Enterprise 2.0 best practice  [December 2010]

Social networking has rapidly evolved during 2010 with “Enterprise 2.0” developing from an abstract term to a more concrete practice area. Inmagic’s experience working with organisations around the world has seen some common threads emerging to become Enterprise 2.0 best practice. A key one is to unite internal collaboration with external communication.

Phil Green from Inmagic discusses how many organisations still have internal collaboration with staff and external communication with customers as mutually exclusive operations. With the advent of social technologies, many are finding real benefit to having both internal and external groups operating under the same umbrella. In his article in CMS Wire, he illustrates a product life cycle management (PLM) scenario, and explains how you can integrate collaboration and communication to foster innovation, information discovery, and more effective business practices.

Social KN adoption best practice  [July 2010]

The key to the success of any new technology initiative is adoption. The most difficult step is bridging the gap between early adopters and the early majority. Inmagic has found several similarities among clients that have enabled them to successfully implement and facilitate adoption of Social Knowledge Networks (SKNs). The learnings and strategies have been documented in Inmagic's latest white paper.

In this paper, Bob Warren (Inmagic Vice President of Products) lays out some proven best practices for encouraging and facilitating adoption that he has noticed surfacing among companies as they build adoption of their SKNs across their teams, departments and organisations. This is a practical collection of do's and don'ts, drawn from Inmagic customers' experiences together with industry research.

This white Paper Social Knowledge Networks: Adoption Strategies and Best Practices can be downloaded from the Inmagic website. Note: You will need to register or login - then go to Inmagic White paper page and click on the paper's title, "Social Knowledge Networks -- Adoption Strategies and Best Practices." The paper will begin downloading. (Registration gives you access to all Inmagic's white papers and other educational resources). More information on Inmagic's blog

Microsoft ends support for older versions of OS  [July 2010]

From July 13, 2010, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and older Server products. This is in line with their product life cycle policy and means there will be no more security updates for these versions. For clients using Inmagic software (Text Works, Web Publisher PRO, Genie or Presto) on Windows Operating Systems (OS), Maxus and your IT support may not be able to help resolve issues or outages in your environment.

To avoid running any unsupported products and assist with your IT planning for 2010, Microsoft strongly recommends that you should have:

  • Migrated to newer, supported versions of these products; or
  • Have a plan to migrate soon; or
  • Purchased a custom support agreement to remain on the end of life products; or
  • Have investigated and accepted the risk associated with using unsupported products.

What are the options available to mitigate against increased vulnerability to security risks?

  • For Windows XP, there are two upgrade options: either deploy the latest Service Pack - SP3 or a more recent supported version of the OS, such as Windows 7. Similarly, you can upgrade Windows Vista to Service Pack 2, or to Windows 7.
  • For Windows 2000 Server, the upgrade options are Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2. (Windows Server 2008 R2 will be supported until 2018 and offers many advantages, particularly in the areas of virtualization, security and manageability.

If you are unsure how you may be affected, please contact Maxus or your local representative for advice.

Presto Case study of Australian Transport eLibrary  [May 2010]

The Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC) has implemented Inmagic Presto for its elibrary to provide access to a growing number of documents and resources for the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC). The TLISC eLibrary presently consists of more than 1000 Word and PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations and Links. These are classified in Presto through browsable taxonomies devised by Amanda Thomas, Director, Research and Policy at TLISC. Amanda says “once we found Presto, it was difficult to be satisified with products that offered less functionality.”

More information is available in the case study
