Inmagic News

As well as continuing to support users of its software for Libraries, Collections and Knowledge Management, Inmagic Inc has broadened its market by the development of IdeaNet. Based on the Presto Social Knowledge Net concept, IdeaNet promotes innovation within an organisation by enabling product development teams to bring together their knowledge and expertise with customer feedback and insight to generate ideas, manage the idea development process, and fuel product innovation.

Inmagic has entered IdeaNet into the 2011 Enterprise 2.0 Conference “Launch Pad competition” to find the market's favourite new and innovative E2.0 product or service. Inmagic has progressed to the quarter finals in this year’s competition where the remaining eight competitors submit short videos about their product, to be voted on by the public.

Web Publisher Pro SFX

Using Text Works and Web Publisher Pro, Inmagic users have achieved some very attractive and functional web applications. But sometimes a little more is needed – that’s where the SFX come in (Special Effects!)

Those of you who catalogue images in a textbase will know that a standard Web Publisher Pro report can only display those images one under the other down the screen. But often it would be preferable to show a larger number of images in a grid arrangement, so that users can see, compare and select images of interest.

As an alternative to using a Text Works form design for the web, Web Publisher Pro can send a search query and retrieve records in XML format. Adding an XSL transform allows for any number of possibilities when displaying the search results, including a grid layout of images, with associated fields from the textbase records.

Here is an example of what can be done:

Image Library

You can choose:
How many pictures will be displayed across the screen
Whether the images in the grid are links to a full screen image
Text and colours for headings and background
Which fields will appear in the “thumbnails” on the grid
The View that appears when “More details” is clicked (Web Publisher Pro screen design)

If this is something you would find useful contact Maxus to find out more!

Hints and Tips
Creating web pages in Text Works if you do not have Web Publisher Pro

Web Publisher Pro is used by many Maxus clients to publish their database/s on the web. However, even if you don’t have Web Publisher Pro it is possible to use Text Works to generate web pages (such as lists of your books or objects) that can be  placed on your web site.

1. Use Text Works to search for and retrieve the records to be included.
2. Select a Report window form (Display>Select Forms or press the Select Forms for this Window icon in the toolbar).
3. Go to File>Write Report to File.
4. Select html.
5. When prompted, specify a name and location for the file.

Note that Simple HTML is used. This means that you can control font colour, size, and attributes, but not the typeface. Also, all boxes appear left justified and box labels appear on top rather than to the left, regardless of the settings you specify in the Form Designer. When you write a report to HTML, the entire report becomes one HTML page. To generate multiple, smaller pages, do searches that generate fewer records, and export each report separately.

Below is an example of a report generated using a simple tabular form:

Tabular report

If you have some knowledge of html you can also edit the htm page after it has been exported to change the layout and style. Here is an example from Morwell Historical Society who have edited the html (note this was generated using a different form in Text Works, rather than the tabular form shown above).

Morwell Historical Society

Remember, though, that unlike Web Publisher Pro, these reports are static not dynamic, so they will need to be re-done when your database is updated.

Gippsland Cataloguing Network Meeting report

Around 20 enthusiastic cataloguers (and allies) were present at the meeting held on 17th August at Trafalgar. Noel from Trafalgar Historical Society welcomed attendees to what may be the smallest historical society premises in Gippsland (and sustained throughout the day by what may be some of the best catering in the region. Thank you!!). Discussions included the role of cataloguer in a Society, the benefits of laptops vs desktops, and “Show and Tell” on a Portable Document scanner.  Barbara Kowalski from Maxus spoke on using DB/Text Works’ Runtime option as well as importing and exporting between Text Works and Excel. In the afternoon the group split into two :  looking at cataloguing session conducted by Linda Barraclough, and an extensive "Ask Barbara" session.

Some useful links that were mentioned at the meeting include:
